It has been an adventuresome fall so far...

Owen took an 10+ hour (one-way) truck ride to Indiana to meet his great grandparents and experience his first visit to a real farm!

We visited a fabulous pumpkin patch this weekend-  Porter Farms, located 15 minutes from our house sells you-pick pumpkins right off the vine!  It was a great time:)

Owen has also been learning about football this season and cheering on his favorite teams (win or lose)...

There has even been time for a play date with his new friend Jackson and our first Baby Story Time experience at the library down the road-

He's also developing a sweet little relationship with this monkey rattle-blanket as he learns to grab and squeeze.

Can't wait for more fall fun!

Owen is 2 Months Old- I can't believe it!

The new fall weather has been perfect for afternoon strolls...

and it's getting us excited about our visit to the pumpkin patch and halloween:)

He is a character that's for sure and we fall in love with him more each day!

Owen is 8 weeks old today!  It's been a "sunny" week full of good naps, happy wake time, library trips, and strolls in this beautiful fall weather.

Still enjoying tummy time-  getting stronger each day!

Really discovered his hands-  can hardly keep the left one out of his mouth during all waking hours.

LOVES books!

So we visited the library to check out some exciting new things.

Bundled up for a stroll in the 60 degree weather-  ahhhh fall!

Bonus!  Sunny weeks mean Mama gets things done-  check out some of the yummy recipes I've whipped up around here lately...

Spicy Sausage, Kale, and Potato Soup- I used about 3 tablespoons of Neufchatel cheese instead of heavy cream since it's what we had on hand.  This was a great way to kick off the first day of autumn.  Delish.

Chewy Oatmeal Craisin Cookies- nice twist on oatmeal raisin since we only had craisins in the pantry.

Crispy Sweet Potato Chips-  these are THE BEST sweet potato chips, just like out of the Terra bag from the grocery.  We love these and have been making them all the time lately.  Just be sure you get started in enough time (they take 2 hours on very low heat in the oven).  Soooo good!

Peanut Butter Granola Balls- these were a nice change from the typical cookies I make.  I used the Chex cereal we already had instead of Rice Crispies and it was a perfect substitution.  Dan loved them!

And for tonight-  I'm testing out this One-Pan Pasta from none other than my Martha Stewart.  We did just score some home grown produce from our neighbor, Lazlow, who stopped us on a walk the other night and started pouring cherry tomatoes into the stroller basket...

plus we just planted some new basil.  This should be a nice and simple meal to bring our rainy Wednesday to a close:)

We sailed passed the one month mark feeling fairly well rested, growing in confidence that we still had a happy and thriving baby on our hands!

Then it happened...week 5 came around and turned our child into an unrecognizable 45 minute napper, chow hound, and clingy-crier.  Something just wasn't right.  So I did what any generation Y parent would do and I turned to my best friend Google to tell me what in the world was wrong with my baby.  After some dedicated research I discovered The Wonder Weeks, a book about the first 10 developmental growth spurts or leaps (different than physical growth spurts although lucky for moms like me they can coincide) that take place in a baby's first year of life.  What do you know?  Week 5 kicks off the first of these Wonder Weeks!  Here is what I learned about Wonder Week 5, The World of Changing Sensations: "Baby's perceptions of the outside world starts changing as he starts sensing more of the stimuli around him."  The behavior associated with this change is increased crying, clingyness, and trouble sleeping.  This was spot on!  To cope with these behaviors they recommend talking, rocking, singing and baby wearing.  Since I already do a good bit of the talking, rocking, and singing I increased it and added in time in the front pack baby carrier, otherwise reserved for grocery trips so far.  Using it around the house allowed me to prepare a fabulous black bean soup for dinner one night and soothe a clingy + crying baby.

Now, we are finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel-  by the end of the weekend, naps were lengthening again and his overall mood seems to be improving.  And now I can brace myself for the next one which is scheduled to hit at week 8 where baby begins to recognize patters, distinguishing himself from the world around him, resulting in a HUGE paradigm shift.  Sounds exciting, huh?  The neat part is when we come out the other side of a wonder week (AKA stormy week) we hit a sunny week where we can noticeably see the progress that he has made as he navigates his way through this crazy life!

The simple fact I am able to blog today is proof that the wonder weeks are survivable and that sunny weeks are ahead.  In fact I was also able to indulge in a cool DIY project that I completed during one successful nap time (1 hr 45 min) today.  I found it on a blog I follow called How Does She.  The title of this particular post caught my eye because it was a tutorial for a make your own infant carrier handle cover (something I debated on buying as we prepared for Owen's arrival but opted out of at the time).  I'm sure you've seen them-

This one in particular retails for $16.95.  I was able to follow the instructions on the blog found here and create one without spending a dime or leaving the house.  I had all of the materials I needed in my craft bin and sewing kit (fabric left over from recovering stools in our townhouse, leftover nursery fabric, ribbon scraps, velcro from the DIY crib skirt, and foam from the window seat).

This was another simple project that looks fancy and makes a statement to the unknowing observer who thinks I purchased this cute + clever addition to our baby carrier:)

I think it turned out pretty great!  And considering how heavy these carriers are, then add in a steadily growing baby boy, it will come in handy the next time I have to lug O Baby through the crowded lobby when early church has just let out (while Dan parks the car) or through the enormous parking lot at the pediatrician's office...among other places.

Owen is 4 weeks today and getting bigger and stronger every day!

He's a happy little guy...

Finally learning to enjoy (tolerate) bath time-

And sweet Abbey is starting to take her role as big sister quite seriously.  She also wants to be sure she's not left out of any quality time that takes place with Mommy on the floor (or really anywhere for that matter:)

We are all loving the preview of Fall weather that is hopefully on the way to stay soon-  strolling is much more pleasant in the 70's than the 90's!  Plus Daddy and Owen are ready for some football.

I'm happy to report Little O is still napping and sleeping (and eating and playing) like a champ-  Life is GOOD!

Our little O baby is just over 3 weeks old!  If I thought time was flying before we had Owen I was mistaken.  It now feels like we are living in a constant state of fast forward and the fact that he changes so much each day makes it feel that much faster.  So we are doing our best to enjoy each second, and snap lots of pictures, to remember every sweet moment:)

Weather permitting, we go for a stroll every day-  he finds it very relaxing...

Abbey enjoys floor time just as much as Little O and can't wait until he learns to throw the ball-

And I can tell he already loves books-  we choose a new one each day and he marvels at the pages!

The wait is over!  And BOY was he ever worth all that waiting-  we welcomed precious Owen Thomas Towler into our world on July 30th at 4:39am.  He has turned everything upside down in the best possible way:)  It's hard to imagine what life was like before he joined us!

He's been busy meeting family (and can't wait to meet more)...

His funny little personality grows each day and he's already got us laughing a lot!

He's certainly captured our hearts-

Can't believe he is already over 2 weeks old!  Here's hoping his good napping habits continue so I can get another update in soon:)
